Blog assignment 4 "Op Art"

Climax by Bridget Riley in 1963. Optical painting is a style of visual art that makes use of optical illusions.  Her black and white paintings that investigated the dynamic effects of optical phenomena. "There was a time when meanings were focused and reality could be fixed; when that sort of belief disappeared, things became uncertain and open to interpretation" is a quote from Bridget Riley on her art work.

Blog assignment 4 "Impasto"

Stage by Robert Ryman in 2002. impasto is a thick application of
paint (usually oil) that makes no attempt to look smooth. This on going investigation has yielded infinite visual possibilities without resort to images, implied spaces or manipulations of framing. In all his paintings the outer edges of the support are left bare and unpainted, so there is no doubt as to its equal importance. His works are typically square in format, and use white paint laid over partially visible, darker colored grounds.

Blog assignment 4 "Local Color"

The Manneporte near Étretat by Claude Monet in 1886. local color is the natural color of an object unmodified by adding light and shadow or any other distortion. The artist walked along the beach, followed by children carrying five or six canvases representing the same subject at different times of the day and with different effects. He took them up and put them aside by turns according to changes in the sky and shadows.

Blog assignment 4 "Analogous Color Palette"

Sore Models #4 by Jane Hammond in 1994. Analogous colors are colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Some examples are green, yellow green and yellow or red, red violet and violet. Analogous color schemes are often found in nature and are pleasing to the eye. The combination of these colors give a bright effect in the area, and are able to accommodate many changing moods. The images derive from exotic and fanciful sources such as magic, puppetry, knot-tying diagrams, alchemy, erotica, palmistry and phrenology, and include commonplace items such as flowers, dancers, games, children's drawings, furniture, animals and the alphabet. I think the color are adjacent to each other on the color wheel but the pics have nothing to do with why I picked it but I did put a reason why the artist put them in there.

Blog assignment 4 "Chiaroscuro"

Jean-Pierre Aumont by Paul Colin in 1930. Chiaroscuro is the technique employed
in the visual arts to represent light and shadow as they define three-dimensional objects.
The face In the back of the painting reminded me of the example in the book Figure of a women to show off
Chiaroscuro.

Blog assignment 4 "Atmospheric Perspective"

Sun rising through Vapor: Fishermen Cleaning and Selling Fish by
Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1807. refers to the effect the atmosphere has on the appearance of an object as it is viewed from a distance. As the distance between an object and a viewer increases, the contrast between the object and its background decreases, and the contrast of any markings or details within the object also decreases. Known as the painter of light, because of his increasing interest in brilliant colours as the main constituent in his landscapes and seascapes.

Blog assignment 3 "Axonometric Projection"

Café Aubette Strasbourg by Theo van Doesburg in 1931. Axonometric projection
is the rendering of an object or floor plan in scale as viewed from a stated angle, Three-dimensional view
that shows the height, width, and depth of an object. However, it does not change when changing the
perspective. The architect's passion for abstract art finds its roots in the anti-rational Dada movement. Doesburg uses large colored shapes as decorations on the walls to draw diagonals that create dynamism and tension coming into contact with the rectangles of the structural elements such as doors and windows.

Blog assignment 3 "Positive/Negative Space or Shape"

Horsefly by Martin Puryear in 2000. negative shape or space is empty space, surrounded and shaped so that it acquires a sense of form or volume. positive shape or space is the figure that commands our attention.embraces contradictory elements. In this sculpture, the skeleton of which is formed by steel rods tied carefully together with wrapped wire, the interest resides in the unlikely combination of tar, wire, steel, and glass. Of these contradictions, Puryear has said, "I'm interested in mediating between a feeling of massiveness and fragility to reach a point of extreme vulnerability" from moma.org.

Blog assignment 3 "Visual Overlapping"

Interface by Steve DiBenedetto in 2002. Visual overlapping in art is when artists add depth to their paintings by positioning some objects behind others. This can be done by applying a mask to closer objects before painting the distant ones. It can also be done by painting the closest objects last. DiBenedetto's drawings aren't as turbid as his paintings, but they're just as busy. He excels at more patterns, weird geometric structures and a lurid all-overness.
His imagery, however, is repetitive and baffling.

Blog assignment 3 "Expressive Line"

Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh 1887. Expressive lines A kind of line that seems to spring
directly from the artist's emotions or feelings. Sunflowers had a special significance for
Van Gogh, He made 11 paintings of them. vangoghgallery.com said Van Gogh's paintings of sunflowers have altered mankind's perspective of art and life. These paintings captivate the mind and leave you astounded in their simplistic beauty. The flowing wilted steams and the burst of lovely yellow draws ones attention around the painting, without disrupting the balance of the piece.

Blog assignment 3 "Implied Line"

La lute contre les moustiques by Chéri Samba in 1956. Implied lines are
lines that are not necessary drawn in an image, but are lines created by values, colors, textures or shapes
that guide the eye though the piece of artwork. The artist essentializes the event or perhaps better , symbolizes it in his work.

Blog assignment 3 "Outline"

Paper Dolls for a Post-Columbian World with Ensembles Contributed by U.S. Government
by Jaune Quick to see Smith in 1991. Outline is the edge of a shape or figure depicted
by an actual line drawn or painted on the surface. In Smiths painting a black outline in the shape of a doll establishes her subjects for the viewer. she helps us remind us of the difference between her mental image of a doll and our own.

Blog assignment 2 image "Iconoclast"

One of the gravest casualties of the 10 year U.S. led war in Iraq is the destruction of the country’s cultural heritage.
In the beginning of the war looting or illegally obtained cultural artifacts happed and no one has an idea of where they went to. They also wanted to remove any remaining symbol of the old government.

Blog assignment 2 image "Icon"

Pieta by Michelangelo in 1550. a Icon is A person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something.
Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pieta was far different from those previously created by other artists, as he sculpted a young and beautiful Mary rather than an older woman around 50 years of age. this could be a symbol to anyone of faith.

Blog assignment 2 image " Nonrepresentational"

the X and its tails by Alexander Calder in 1967. Nonrepresentational art are works of art
that do not refer to a natural or objective world at all. we mean everything from the materials used to make it, to the way it employs the various formal element, to the way in which those elements are organized into a composition.

Blog assignment 2 image "Abstraction"

Xmas tree hill by Wolf Kahn in 1994. Kahn's idea of abstract is " when a work becomes too descriptive, too much involved with what's actually out there, then there's nothing else going on in the painting, and it dies on you". the fact is it's said his paintings are more about light than the actual landscape.

Blog assignment 2 image 2 "Representational"

Mountain brook by Albert Bierstadt in 1863. representational art portrays
recognizable forms. The more the representation resembles what the eye sees, the more
it is said to be an example of realism. The New England landscapes, particularly
of the White Mountains, as seen here praised the artist’s
deft contrast of “light and shade,” which brought a heightened realism to the image.

Blog assignment 2 first image

The human condition by Rene Magritte in 1945.
Form means the over structure of the art work and
content is what the art expresses or means.
according to onesurrealistaday.com out side the front door seen from inside a room, I placed a painting representing exactly that
portion of the landscape covered by the painting. Thus, the beach in the
picture hid the ball behind it, outside the room. For the spectator, it was both inside
the room within the painting and outside in the real landscape. Which is how we see
the world, namely, outside of us; although having only one representation of it within
us. Similarly we sometimes remember a past event as being in the present. Time and
space lose meaning and our daily experience becomes paramount.
